Keep Climbing!

As a member of the John Maxwell Certified Leadership Team, I recently attended the semi-annual leadership conference in Orlando, Florida. It was a fantastic four-day event surrounded by like-minded people and filled with world-class speakers such as John Maxwell, Jesse Cole of the Savannah Bananas baseball team, and many more.

The title of this blog is Keep Climbing. But I am not referring to climbing the promotional ladder or the world’s idea of climbing the ladder of success. I am addressing personal and professional development.

Far too many people do nothing on their own for development. Sure, there are individuals in all walks of life and professions who attend a course or training session when told to do so. Then there are those who ask, “Am I getting paid to do this? Does this mean I have to go on my day off? Is the department paying for this? Do I have to pay for it myself?” This is the description of average and mediocre employees.

The conference I attended is called the International Maxwell Certification (IMC) and there were hundreds of people who put forth the time and monetary investment to improve their leadership skills and abilities. Everyone was there because they wanted to be there. This was an event filled with people who are not content with average, and they want to keep climbing the ladder of personal and professional development.

What about you? Are you willing to go beyond what your department or organization requires? Are you willing to invest in yourself or are you one of the thousands of ordinary and average people in life who are content with where they are and have no interest in improving their leadership skills and abilities? Keep climbing, invest in yourself, and then give back to those around you.
