“It is What it is.”

How often have you heard that statement? How often have you said it yourself?

This can be another mind-numbing, oft repeated, meaningless phrase of defeat or it could be the catalyst for action.

I cannot count the number of times I have heard someone say, “It is what it is.” But their body language, voice tone and inflection are indicative of surrender and defeat. They throw up their hands and wave the white flag. They remind me of A.A. Milne’s character in Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore, the pessimistic, gloom and doom filled donkey.

Yes, there are things in life that we cannot change but we can accept. I cannot change my height or the color of my eyes. That is fact but it is not a defeat. It is acceptance of a fact that I have no control over.

On the other hand, I do not know if I have ever heard someone say, “It is what it is, but what action can I take to confront the issue?” That is an individual who has a bias for action. That is the person who faces an obstacle and has the courage and willingness to confront it head on and do something about it. It may be difficult and challenging, but that is the person who will not settle for mediocrity and defeat.
