This post continues the series based on comments made by Mark Cole, the CEO of the Maxwell Certified Leadership Team. Speaking at the International Maxwell Certification event held in Orlando, Florida, he said, “Be the one” and then he touched on eight topics, one of which was “Be the one that counts.”
What does that mean to me?
Two of the definitions for the word “count” defined by the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary are, “to rely or depend on someone or something” and “to have value or significance.”
- Who counts on you to provide for their basic needs?
- Who counts on you to do an excellent job?
- Who counts on you to be a professional?
When someone or an organization counts on us, that is a responsibility we must take seriously. This boils down to individual character. Are we who and what we say we are, or do we shirk the responsibility of taking care of our family, coworkers, or the citizens (for those in public service)?
To “be the one that counts” means having the courage to step up to the plate and not only do what is expected, but to go above and beyond that mark. How about you? Are you a person that can be counted on?
